Default Arrangement

The Weiss Fund’s standard practice is to execute grant agreements directly with the eligible Principal Investigator’s (PI) home institution.

Exception 1: JPAL and IPA Pass-Through Grants

When the entire grant will be passed through to JPAL (Abdul Latif Jameel Poverty Action Lab) or IPA (Innovations for Poverty Action), the Weiss Fund may execute the grant agreement directly with these organizations on behalf of the eligible PI, subject to the following conditions:

Eligibility Requirements

  • Funds would otherwise be lost if not contracted directly
  • Written request must be submitted with your application
  • Reviewed on a case-by-case basis

Exception 2: Other Third-Party Entities

For all other third-party organizations, the PI or a Co-PI must be legally affiliated with that entity. The Co-PI does not need to be Weiss Fund eligible, but each arrangement will be reviewed case-by-case basis, subject to the following conditions:

Eligibility Requirements

  • Funds would otherwise be lost if not contracted directly
  • Written request must be submitted with your application
  • Reviewed on a case-by-case basis
  • The PI or co-author must have a legal affiliation with the third-party institution to be eligible for this arrangement

Important Terms

  • Standard contract terms cannot be changed or waived
  • The third-party organization assumes full responsibility for:
    • Following the funding schedule
    • Working with awarded PIs to fulfill reporting requirements
  • The third-party organization will sign the contract on the PI’s behalf and will hold:
    • Publication rights
    • Intellectual property rights
  • Payment delays may occur for the initial 30% payment due to:
    • Vendor setup requirements in the university’s system
    • Additional procurement contract requirements (terms non-negotiable)

Key Reminders for All Third-Party Arrangements

  • Contract terms are non-negotiable
  • Third parties assume full contractual responsibility
  • Publication and IP rights transfer to the third party
  • Initial payment delays are likely due to administrative setup requirements
